As one of the pioneering DJ elite of South Beach’s golden age, David Knapp has impressed audiences the world over with his unique sound & dynamic DJ performances. While most of today’s dj talent were still busy honing their skills in their bedrooms, David was cutting his teeth in his friend Danny Tenaglia’s booth in the early South Beach days. David also quickly gained the attention of Junior Vasquez, becoming one of the only dj’s Vasquez ever trusted to dj at his NYC clubs. It was through these key relationships, his residency at The Amnesia Tea Dances, and his groundbreaking performances at the crown jewel of all circuit events, the Miami White Party at Vizcaya, that David quickly ascended to the top tier of global dj talent.
David’s own words describe this time. “What was created in South Beach was so forward, so House-centric and universal, that all of the visiting club promoters and Winter Music Conference attendees flew me back to their clubs to energize their crowds.“ Knapp continued to wow South Beach and the world. David became the only DJ to headline a major circuit event for an astonishing 11 years, helping the White Party to grow exponentially into the weeklong festival it is today. By 1994, David became South Beach’s biggest global export. Along with his musical legacy, David championed social consciousness. Further assisting White Party with fundraising, Knapp came up with the idea of producing a first-of-its-kind annual mixed cd, to commemorate the annual White Party events. This was a very forward thinking idea. It helped upped the ante for the organization incorporating brand name merchandising helped create a presence in the now global market place while most dj’s were still trading off their making mixtapes.
To date, David has produced over 24 mixed compilations, with sales unrivaled by any other DJ in his category. David’s career has continued to morph and expand beyond his courtship as the original “King of the Circuit”. David’s list of long-running club residencies is the stuff made of legends. It is an A-list, or “Who’s Who”, of venues, including The Amnesia Tea Dances (8 years), Coliseum (8 years), and Manor (at present) in South Florida, as well as The Palladium (4 years), Limelight (2 years), Splash (5 years), Roxy (2 years), and Twilo (2 years) in New York. David has also held residencies in every other major market, with Gus Events in San Francisco, Hydrate in Chicago, and the DC clubs Tracks, Nation, and Town Danceboutique. There is not a circuit event, Pride event, or showcase nightclub, that hasn’t included David in it’s roster of supreme DJ talent.
David has delivered his trademark sets an impressive 13 times in Montreal during Black and Blue Weekend, a record 18 times for Disney’s Gay Days, in NYC for Saint’s erotic no holds barred Black Parties, Amsterdam’s mammoth Rapido events, at Avalon nightclub in Boston, and as the longest running guest dj for the Legendary July 4th parties in the Gay mecca of Provincetown.
